110 years since the Austro-Hungarian declaration of war and the beginning of the first world war

28.07.2024

A month after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. On 23rd July 1914, Austria-Hungary gave an ultimatum to the Serbian government. Serbia did not accept all the terms, and so on 28th July 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war. A chain reaction of war declarations by other states followed. Carnage, that started 110 years ago, claimed more than 8 million lives.

The war hit hard Slovenian people too. Men, also those from Soča valley, were departing for the frontlines in enormous numbers, while women took many duties in the rear. In the Soča valley peace still reigned, up until May 1915, when a new frontline was established.

In the Kobarid museum we are preserving memories and heritage of the World War one and the Isonzo front. These commemorative days are right on cue to visit memory sites, open air museums and the Kobarid museum.

In summertime we are open every day, from 9.00 to 19.00, we can also arrange you guided tours, if you make a reservation.

You are welcome!
